Digitization continues to impact our lives and the technology has made everything so simple and quick. There are various advantages of digitalization and online services in almost all the sectors including road transport and management. For example, HSRPs and FASTags can be purchased online, hence if you are interested in buying a KVB FASTag, all you need to do is submit an application and fee through the bank’s online portal. Similarly, the government designed the Parivahan Sewa website using which applicants can submit the application for the vehicle-related services like issuance of DL and RC from the comfort of their home.
RTO forms required to submit any vehicle-related application and are also available online. For instance, if you want to get an International Driving Permit, you can download the application form online and do not have to visit the RTO to get the form. If you want to know more about an IDP, then here’s the complete guide on it.
An International Driving Licence is a legal document that grants a permit to drive on foreign roads. This licence is necessary when you want to rent a car and drive in a foreign country. Only those who are above 18 years of age can apply for an IDP in India. Besides this, a person should have a permanent driving licence before applying for an International Driving Permit.
As stated above, you can download the RTO form online and for getting an IDP, Form 4 or ‘Form for the Issue of International Driving Permit’ is required. After downloading the form, you need to fill all the details in the form, take the documents and visit the RTO to submit the application and the fee. Once done, you can be asked to give the driving test after which an IDP licence is issued. The documents that you are supposed to submit at the RTO along with the form are:
- Copy of passport
- Copy of respective visa
- Copy of flight tickets
- A medical certificate (Form CMV 1 & 1A)
- Application form (CMV-4
- Age proof
- Address proof
- Passport size photographs
- Valid proof of Indian Citizenship
The validity of an International Driving Permit or Licence is one year and hence after this period, it is not considered valid. Earlier the Indian Laws did not allow a person to apply for the renewal of an International Driving Permit. However, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently revised the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and started offering the facility of International Driving Licence renewal to citizens of India.
If you want to apply for an IDP renewal, you can do it through the Indian Embassies/Missions abroad. Once you have applied there, the application will be processed further to the VAHAN portal in India and then finally it will move to the Regional Transport Offices (RTOs). It is worth mentioning that a person applying for renewal is supposed to submit some documents including the driving licence, identity proof, passport size photographs, etc. Once the renewal application gets verified, the international licence is couriered to the person by the RTO.
